My roommate has two cats that make my allergies go haywire when they are roaming the apartment. When she puts them in her room, I am fine. However, lately we have only been letting one of the cats out. No allergies! Could I somehow be allergic to only the one cat?
The other cat has long hair and sheds more, while the one we let out doesn’t. He is also a male, while the long-hair cat is female. I have no idea if these things matter, but those are the major differences.

It depends. People who are allergic to cats aren’t allergic to the cat themselves…but the dander and saliva the cat uses to clean itself. Chances are, the other cat doesn’t clean itself as much.

It also depends on the type/texture of fur,.. I truly believe.
I have some cats with short or longcoarse hairs, and other long-haired cats with angel-fine fly-away type of hair/fur. (which sticks to everything, like Velcro)

I think it’s perfectly possible you’re only allergic to the one cat. Perhaps it produces more dander, and maybe it cleans itself more or much less as one other sharp reader said. You can buy some throw-away clothes in a pop-up dispenser at the pet store to wipe down the cat and minimize dander. I think it’s called “Aller-pet” but I’m not sure. You can also take Claritan or some over the counter allergy meds. (I find the store generics work very well.)

    Good luck! :)
